Before moving day
- Inspect the apartment — check plumbing, electricity, windows, locks
- Take photos/videos — document the condition before you move in
- Get the agreement signed — never move in without a signed tenancy agreement
- Set up utilities — prepaid meter, water connection, internet installation
- Plan your move — book a moving company or arrange a vehicle at least a week early
On moving day
- Do a final walkthrough — make sure nothing has changed since inspection
- Test everything — light switches, taps, toilet flush, socket outlets
- Note any defects — report to landlord/agent in writing immediately
- Meet your neighbours — a quick introduction goes a long way
- Secure your space — change locks if allowed, or at least ensure all keys work
First week essentials
- Buy a fire extinguisher — not optional
- Stock first aid kit — plasters, painkillers, antiseptic
- Set up your kitchen — gas cylinder check, cooking essentials
- Organize shared spaces — if you have a flatmate, agree on common area rules
- Register with estate security — if applicable
If you have a flatmate
- Split initial costs — agree on who buys what (shared items vs personal)
- Set up a shared account — for bills and shared expenses
- Create a cleaning schedule — the earlier, the better
- Exchange emergency contacts — family member or close friend each
